The Astro festival, hosted by the planetary popular Višnjan (Tičan) Observatory, takes place every year on June 21st, the day of the summer solstice. This date officially marks the astronomical start of summer, serving as the longest and brightest day of the year. What is truly characteristic of this day is that the Venus Belt (Definition: a luminous phenomenon that occurs in the Earth’s atmosphere in the form of a wide, pink-orange strip of light extending across the sky above the horizon, precisely on the opposite side of the Sun, in the anti-twilight point) lasts the longest, thus featuring the most beautiful and diverse colours. Astro festival kicks off at 5 PM, as the audience collectively invokes the sunset. The festivities continue through the night until 5 AM the following morning, right up to the moment of sunrise. The event features various activities, band performances, and also, uniquely: PERFORMANCES BY THE PLANETS THEMSELVES!
IDEA AND EXECUTION:
The magnificence of the Venus Belt on the day of the solstice served as the inspiration for the concept. In execution, the poster features a colour gradient that literally translates the colours visible in the sky during a specific time period (an hour), on the day of the solstice. Thus, the colour itself, being identical in the sky and on the poster, communicates the timing of individual performances, effectively, through colour, turning the poster into a kind of time indicator—a clock. The left side of the poster announces the performances of the planets in the sky, which can be followed from the Observatory, both with the naked eye and via telescope. The right side announces the performances on stage and the activities held in honour of the solstice.
The text announcing the performances is intentionally minimal for three key reasons:
1. To align the performance schedule with the exact time block displayed by each colour shade.
2. To honour nature by avoiding disruption, allowing the beautiful Venus Belt colours to come into full effect.
3. To reflect the Observatory’s principle: The posters first attract attention, then entice the visitor to approach and discover the hidden details—mirroring the process of observing the sky and planets through a telescope.
RESULTS:
+65% increase in visitors in 2026. Organizer: “Greater brand recognition, clearer program communication, and a stronger connection with the audience.”
